NEW YORK, Aug. 16 (UPI) -- Amelie Mauresmo has withdrawn from the U.S. Open Tennis Tournament because of a lingering groin injury and needed recovery time after an appendectomy.

"My doctor has recommended that I allow myself additional time to rest and recover from this injury so that it is completely healed," Mauresmo said in a statement provided by the United States Tennis Association. "Obviously, this is one of the worst times of the year for me to have an injury that has continued to prevent me from playing on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour."

Mauresmo, a former world No. 1, currently is ranked seventh on the women's tennis tour.

In past U.S. Open appearances, she has reached either the quarterfinals or the semis the last six years in a row.

She has two major tournament titles -- the Australian Open and Wimbledon -- both coming in 2006.
