Laura Diaz out front at Canadian Open

EDMONTON, Alberta, Aug. 16 (UPI) -- Laura Diaz Thursday took the lead at the Canadian Women's Open at Edmonton, Alberta, by firing a first-round 6-under 65.

Diaz had a one-shot advantage over Kelli Kuehne and Kyeong Bae at the Royal Mayfair Golf & Country Club.

Newly crowned Women's British Open champion Lorena Ochoa shot a 70 and was tied for 17th place. Michelle Wie struggled to a 75 and was tied for 106th.

Diaz tied for second last week at the Scandinavian TPC and opened her round Thursday with a 12-foot birdie putt. She closed the day with birdies on three of her final four holes.

Heather Young, Jeong Jang, Meena Lee, Shi Hyun Ahn, Ya-Ni Tseng and Jill McGill were tied for fourth at 67.
