Reds put Gonzalez on bereavement list

CINCINNATI, Aug. 15 (UPI) -- Cincinnati shortstop Alex Gonzalez Wednesday was placed on the team’s bereavement list.

His 10-month old son, Johan, has been treated for an undisclosed illness all summer.

It has forced the nine-year veteran to be away twice previously this season, from April 13-16 and July 14-20.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reported Gonzalez was told to stay with his child as long as necessary.

Gonzalez is hitting .262 with 16 homers and 51 RBI in 343 at-bats this season, including .393 since Aug. 3, when he returned from the inactive list.

There is no timetable for is return, but a player on the bereavement list must be away for a minimum of three days and a maximum of seven.
