Kuznetsova advances at Rogers

TORONTO, Aug. 15 (UPI) -- Svetlana Kuznetsova, back in action after a Wimbledon quarterfinal loss to Venus Williams, knocked off Italian Roberta Vinci Tuesday at the Rogers Cup.

The No. 3 Russian breezed to a 6-2 win in the first set but struggled some before putting Vinci away 7-6 (9-7) for the second-round victory. She will face the winner of Wednesday's match between No. 16 Lucie Safarova and U.S. player Meghann Shaughnessy.

In other action at the $1.34 million hardcourt event at Rexall Centre on the campus of York University in Toronto, 11th-seeded Israeli Shahar Peer eliminated Italian Tathiana Garbin 6-3, 6-2, while China's Shuai Peng upset 14th-seeded Slovenian Katarina Srebotnik 6-1, 4-2, as Srebotnik retired due to a viral illness.
