Elliott came out of retirement in June, saying he was committed to getting the No. 21 Wood brothers/JTG Ford back into contention into the top 35 in the Nextel Cup points standings.
Elliott likely made Said's day, after Said failed to qualify his No Fear Ford Friday for the 43-car field because rain stopped the qualifying event.
"I met Boris (Saturday) morning in the garage and I guess I had my car owner hat on," Elliott told NASCAR.com. "The thing about it is, with where this team is in the points, it's the most logical thing to do."
In the latest standings, Elliott's ride is in 36th place, and Said is 50th.
"For Bill to step aside like that is amazing," Said noted.
