MLB: San Francisco 5, Washington 0

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., Aug. 9 (UPI) -- Barry Bonds began the process of expanding his all-time home run record Wednesday as he hit a two-run shot in San Francisco's 5-0 win over Washington.

Bonds, who took Hank Aaron's place as baseball's home run king Tuesday, hit the 757th long ball of his career in the first inning with Randy Winn aboard.

San Francisco starter Matt Cain helped his own cause by hitting the first homer of his major league career, a solo shot in the fifth. Cain improved to 4-12 by allowing only three hits over six innings.

Jack Taschner and Vinnie Chulk finished the shutout by allowing one hit over the final three innings.

Tim Redding (1-3) gave up four runs on six hits over seven innings to take the loss.
