Irvin, Thomas among six in NFL Hall

CANTON, Ohio, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- Michael Irvin, Thurman Thomas, Bruce Matthews, Charlie Sanders, Gene Hickerson and Roger Wehrli were enshrined Saturday into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Irvin was a three-time Super Bowl champion in his 12 seasons with Dallas from 1988-99. He had 750 receptions for 11,904 yards with 65 touchdowns.

Thomas played the first 12 years of his career with Buffalo and helped the Bills to four straight AFC Championships in the 1990s. He is the only player to lead the NFL in total yards from scrimmage for four consecutive seasons.

A five-time Pro Bowl choice, Thomas rushed for 12,074 yards in his career.

Matthews played 19 seasons with Houston/Tennessee. His 296 games are the most for any positional player in NFL history.

Sanders and Hickerson were Seniors Committee nominees. Sanders was a seven-time Pro Bowl pick in 10 seasons with the Detroit Lions from 1968-77 and Hickerson never experienced a losing season in 15 seasons with the Cleveland Browns from 1958-73.

Wehrli had 40 career interceptions in 14 seasons for the St. Louis Cardinals from 1969-82 and was a seven-time Pro Bowl pick.
