A-Rod youngest to hit 500 home runs

NEW YORK, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- New York Yankees Alex Rodriguez became the youngest player to hit 500 homers Saturday when he hit a three-run shot in the first inning against Kansas City.

Rodriguez, who turned 32 July 27, topped Jimmie Foxx (32 years, 338 days) as the youngest player to reach that career mark.

Rodriguez hit his 36th home run of the season and became the 22nd player in MLB history to reach 500. He is the second player to reach home run No. 500 this season. Frank Thomas of the Toronto Blue Jays reached the milestone on June 28.

Rodriguez is the third Yankees player to reach 500 home runs, joining Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle.

It took Rodriguez 1,855 games to reach 500 home runs, is the third fastest in MLB history. Mark McGwire did it in 1,639 games while it took Ruth 1,740 games.
