Furyk questionable for WGC event

AKRON, Ohio, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- The best players in the world gather again beginning Thursday for a World Golf Championship event, but back problems could force Jim Furyk to skip it.

Furyk vaulted to the No. 2 ranking in the world with his win last week at the Canadian Open. But he has a sore back and he aggravated the problem during practice Tuesday.

He was not expected to make a decision concerning this week's event until Thursday morning. The fact that the PGA Championship is scheduled for next week could play a key role in Furyk's decision.

This week's tourney -- The Bridgestone Invitational -- has an announced field of 112 players. They will compete over the Firestone Country Club course, where Tiger Woods has won five times.

Woods is to tee off at 9:14 a.m. local time along with Brett Wetterich and Andres Romero, who came close to capturing last month's British Open.
