MLB: N.Y. Mets 3, Washington 1

NEW YORK, July 28 (UPI) -- Orlando Hernandez tossed three-hit, one-run ball over seven innings Saturday as the New York Mets beat Washington 3-1 in the opener of a doubleheader.

New York's Ruben Gotay drove in the eventual winning run with a single in the bottom of the seventh. The Mets also got one RBI apiece from Lastings Milledge and Carlos Delgado. Gotay and Reyes both had two hits to help New York halt a two-game skid.

Hernandez (7-4) walked only two batters and fanned eight Nationals, while closer Billy Wagner recorded his 24th save.

Washington's Felipe Lopez hit his sixth homer, a solo shot in the top of the sixth. All-Star Dmitri Young had the other two hits for the Nationals, who had won their previous two games.

Washington starter Tim Redding yielded one earned run and five hits in six innings, with four walks and eight strikeouts.

The losing pitcher was reliever Saul Rivera (4-3).
