MLB: N.Y. Yankees 8, Baltimore 7

BALTIMORE, July 27 (UPI) -- Yankees closer Mariano Rivera came on to induce a double-play and ice an 8-7 win over the Baltimore Orioles in a game that had been suspended a month ago.

The game began June 28. It was suspended due to rain with two outs in the top of the eighth and New York leading, 8-7.

Baltimore scored a run in the bottom of the ninth on a double by Corey Patterson followed by a pinch-hit single by Ramon Hernandez. Rivera then ended the threat by getting Huff to bounce into a double play.

Mike Myers (2-0) started the brief contest for the Yankees and notched one out before walking Chris Gomez and then giving way to Rivera.

Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez, who came into the game with 499 home runs, grounded out in his only at-bat -- tying up a loose end on record keeping for his career home run total.

When the game started June 28, Rodriguez had 492 career homers. If he had homered Friday, it would have been counted as his 493rd home run.

Instead, the homer he hit Wednesday in Kansas City stands as his 500th.
