Tiger Woods struggles to three-over 74

CARNOUSTIE, Scotland, July 20 (UPI) -- Two-time defending champion Tiger Woods opened the second round at the British Open with a double-bogey Friday and struggled to a three-over-par 74.

The challenging round left Woods at one-over 143 after two rounds at Carnoustie, Scotland, seven stokes behind tournament leader Sergio Garcia, whose even-par 71 gave him a two-shot halfway lead.

Woods was off from his first-hole tee shot, which he sent out of bounds into the water. He recovered with a 3-foot birdie on No. 2, but bogeyed No. 5, and struggled to save par at 7 and again at 10.

Woods got back to par for the championship with a birdie on the 14th hole -- had pars on 15, 16 and 17 -- but landed in a bunker on 18 to end the round with another bogey.

Woods is trying to become the first player to win three consecutive British Open championships since Peter Thomson in 1954-56.
