NFL suspends Rams cornerback

NEW YORK, July 15 (UPI) -- St. Louis Rams cornerback Fakhir Brown will miss four games after an NFL suspension for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy.

The suspension starts with the Rams' 2007 season-opener Oct. 7 against Arizona.

No specific details were released by the league's front office in New York.

"It creates an opportunity for great competition at the other corner spot opposite Tye Hill," Rams Coach Scott Linehan told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "I'm disappointed for the team. We're losing a guy we were counting on for the first four games of the year."

The newspaper report said Brown will lose about $250,000 from his base salary.

Ron Bartell, a second-round draft pick in 2005 out of Howard University, and veteran Lenny Walls, a free-agent signed during the off-season, likely will be the other candidates to fill Brown's starting spot at right cornerback.
