PHOENIX, July 13 (UPI) -- Eric Byrnes started a first-inning outburst against Greg Maddux Friday night and the Arizona Diamondbacks went on to defeat San Diego, 8-3.
Arizona -- one of the few teams to have given Maddux problems during his 340-victory career -- did so again Friday night, roughing him up for four runs on nine hits in four innings as he fell to 7-7.
Maddux is 1-10 lifetime in 16 starts against Arizona.
After retiring the first two men in the opening inning, Maddux gave up a single to Byrnes, a double to Chad Tracy, a double to Conor Jackson and a single to Stephen Drew, accounting for three runs.
Arizona pounded out 15 hits, with Chris Snyder contributing a two-run single as part of a three-run seventh that gave the Diamondbacks a 7-3 lead.
The win went to Doug Davis (6-10), who gave up two runs on five hits in six innings.
