Portland's Greg Oden slowed by tonsillitis

LAS VEGAS, July 10 (UPI) -- Portland Trail Blazers center Greg Oden, top pick in this year's NBA draft, will undergo a tonsillectomy Saturday to have his tonsils removed.

The procedure will be performed at the The Vancouver Clinic in Vancouver, British Columbia, by Dr. Don Newell. The recovery time is expected to be between two and three weeks.

Oden's summer-league season comes to an end after just two games. The seven-foot center will miss the July 20-22 USA National team's mini-camp in Las Vegas.

The inflammation was discovered Monday during a trip to the dentist.

Oden averaged 15.7 points, 9.6 rebounds and 3.3 blocks a game while playing one season for the Ohio State Buckeyes. The Trail Blazers took him first overall in the June 28 draft.
