Edberg leads the European Open

KILDARE, Ireland, July 6 (UPI) -- Sweden's Pelle Edberg shot 5-under-par 65 Friday to grab a one-shot lead after two rounds of the European Open Golf Tournament at Kildare, Ireland.

Edgerg's 36-hole score is 8-under 132, while fellow Swede Niclas Fasth and Scotland's Colin Montgomerie are tied for second at 7-under-par 133.

"I thought I was going to be more nervous when I played today seeing my name popping up the leaderboard," Edberg said. "I stayed pretty calm (but) if there's going to be a crowd out there tomorrow, I may get nervous."

It is the first time Edberg has held a 36-hole lead in a European Tour event.

His second round included six birdies and just one bogey.

Montgomerie, an eight-time Order of Merit winner, shot 6-under 64 with seven birdies and a bogey.

Fasth (68) had four birdies and two bogeys.

David Frost (66) and Simon Khan (67) are tied for fourth at 6-under 134.
