KANSAS CITY, Mo., July 4 (UPI) -- Jarrod Washburn and J.J. Putz combined on a five-hitter Wednesday as Seattle gave John McLaren his first managerial win, 4-0 over Kansas City.
McLaren, previously the Mariners' bench coach, took over when Mike Hargrove shocked the organization by resigning Sunday. Seattle won its last eight games under Hargrove and then lost its first two under McLaren.
The Mariners scored four times in the first inning with Adrian Beltre driving in two with a double and Jose Guillen delivering a two-run single.
That was all the scoring as Washburn (8-6) allowed five hits and struck out five through eight innings.
After Washburn allowed the first two batters to reach in the ninth, Putz came in and got pinch-hitter Shane Costa to hit into a force play and Alex Gordon to ground into a double play. It was Putz's 24th save.
Brian Bannister (5-5) allowed four runs on seven hits over seven innings.
