Mahan wins the Travers Championship

CROMWELL, Conn., June 24 (UPI) -- Hunter Mahan Sunday beat Jay Williamson in a playoff to win the PGA's Travelers Championship at Cromwell, Conn.

Mahan birdied the 18th hole twice -- once in regulation and once in the playoff -- to win for the first time on the tour.

He played in the event in 2000 -- when it was called the Greater Hartford Open -- and missed the cut as an amateur.

"That seems like light years ago," Mahan told reporters. "I've put on a few (pounds) since then (but) this place is special to me."

The title was worth $1.08 million.

Mahan shot 5-under 65 in the final round, while Williamson shot 4-under 66. Both players finished 72 holes at 15-under 265, four shots ahead of Nick O'Hern (66).

"I'm a little disappointed right now," Williamson said. "(But) I'm glad I was able to be here."

Vijay Singh (65) finished fourth at 10-under 270.
