SAN FRANCISCO, June 23 (UPI) -- Alex Rodriguez had four hits and two RBI Friday night as the New York Yankees overcame Barry Bonds' 749th home run to down San Francisco, 7-3.
With the Giants trailing, 6-2, Bonds led off the eighth inning against Scott Proctor with his 15th homer of the season, moving him within six of Hank Aaron's all-time MLB record.
Melky Cabrera gave the Yankees a 3-0 lead in the second with a two-run single and Rodriguez contributed a run-scoring single in the fifth.
New York reliever Luis Vizcaino (4-1) picked up the victory after shutting down a Giants rally in the sixth.
Mariano Rivera recorded the last five outs to earn his ninth save.
The loss went to San Francisco starter Matt Cain (2-8), who surrendered five runs on seven hits in five innings.
