Dodgers pitcher to have shoulder surgery

TORONTO, June 19 (UPI) -- Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Jason Schmidt will have arthroscopic surgery Wednesday on his pitching shoulder.

The Dodgers will learn how long Schmidt, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday, will be sidelined after the surgery.

Schmidt, who signed a three-year, $47 million contract with the Dodgers last December, spent nearly seven weeks on the disabled list with shoulder bursitis earlier this season. He has had just three starts since.

In six starts overall this season, Schmidt is 1-4 with a 6.31 ERA.
