Sharapova advances past second round

BIRMINGHAM, England, June 13 (UPI) -- Maria Sharapova and Jelena Jankovic, both losers in last week's French Open semifinals, were among the second-round winners Wednesday at the DFS Classic.

Sharapova, the No. 1 seed in this event and its champion in 2004 and 2005, was a 6-4, 6-0 winner over Lilia Osterloh. Jankovic easily got past Tsvetana Pironkova 6-4, 6-1.

Other seeded players advancing Wednesday were No. 5 Marion Bartoli, who posted a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Naomi Cavaday; No. 6 Alona Bondarenko, a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Yung-Jan Chan; and No. 8 Mara Santangelo, who fought off Sania Mirza 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6).

Seventh-seeded Ai Sugiyama was an upset victim of Ayumi Morita 6-4, 1-6, 6-2.
