Carliesle leaves Pacers front office

INDIANAPOLIS, June 12 (UPI) -- Rick Carlisle, fired as the Indianapolis Pacers coach last month, Tuesday said he would leave his job as the team's executive vice president.

Pacers officials offered Carlisle a front-office position when they relieved him of his coaching duties after the team went 35-47 this past season and failed to make the NBA playoffs for the first time since 1997.

However, Carlisle said he "felt it was better for both the Pacers and myself to part ways at this time."

In four seasons as the Pacers coach, Carlisle built a 181-147 record. He guided the team to a 61-21 mark and the Eastern Conference finals in 2003-04.

Jim O'Brien was hired May 31 to replace Carlisle as the Pacers coach.
