Haas leads seniors by three in Des Moines

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa, June 9 (UPI) -- Jay Haas made six birdies in a seven-hole span Saturday to widen his lead at the senior Principal Charity Classic in West Des Moines, Iowa.

Haas, the reigning Champions Tour Player of the Year, shot a 4-under 67 in the second round to move to 10-under 132 -- three shots ahead of second-place David Edwards.

Edwards had a 68 Saturday and is at 135.

Denis Watson, who won the Senior PGA Championship last month, had a 67 to stand third at 136.

Haas, who held a one-shot lead over Dave Eichelberger at the start of the second round, is an eight-time winner on the Champions Tour, including twice this year.

Haas held a one-shot lead last week going into the final round of the Boeing Championship at Sandestin, but lost to Loren Roberts after a final-round 73 and tied for fifth place.

Brad Bryant (65) and Mark James (70) are tied for fourth place at 137.
