Dix breaks 10 seconds in 100 meters

SACRAMENTO, June 8 (UPI) -- Florida State's Walter Dix ran the fastest 100 meters in the world this year Friday to win the NCAA title and move the Seminoles closer to the team crown.

Dix turned in a personal best 9.93 seconds to easily get the better of LSU's Trindon Holliday -- who finished second in 10.06.

Florida State runners Michael Ray Garvin and Greg Bolden finished sixth and seventh in the race, and the Seminoles also captured the sprint relay earlier in the evening.

In addition, Florida State's Andrew Lemoncello finished second to Mississippi's Barnabas Kirui in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

The defending champion Seminoles closed the next-to-last day of the national meet with 34 points -- two ahead of Auburn and three in front of LSU.

Arizona State, thanks in part to April Kubishta's win in the pole vault, led the women's team race with 38 points. USC had 27 and LSU 26.
