LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., June 7 (UPI) -- The Tampa Bay Devil Rays made left-handed pitcher David Price the No. 1 selection Thursday in the 2007 baseball draft.
Price played collegiate baseball at Vanderbilt, which went into this year's NCAA tournament as the top-ranked team, but fell to Michigan in last week's regional tournament.
"I'm very excited," Price said. "They have a great manager in Joe Maddon. Everybody talks about their young players, but they forget about their older ones. I think when you have a good mix of veterans and younger players, that's when you have something really good going for you."
Price went 11-1 this season with a 2.64 ERA. He struck out a school-record 194.
Kansas City selected infielder Mike Moustakas from Chatsworth (Calif.) High School with the second pick. Third baseman Josh Vitters of Cypress (Calif.) High School went third to the Chicago Cubs, and Clemson left-handed pitcher Daniel Moskos was chosen fourth by Pittsburgh.
Rounding out the top five was switch-hitting Georgia Tech catcher Matt Wieters, chosen by Baltimore.
