The six-year veteran, who has never been sidelined by a major injury, originally was a fifth-round draft choice out of Kansas State by St. Louis in 2001. He had spent his entire career with the Rams before Thursday's signing.

"I'm excited to be here," he said on the Redskins' Web site. "My focus is to stay healthy and make plays when I'm out on the field -- whether it's one play here or two."

Butler is seen as at least a back-up to likely starters Shawn Springs and Fred Smoot.

In 63 career games, the 5-foot-10 inch, 185-pounder has 176 total tackles and nine interceptions.

He also expressed a desire to play on special teams if needed.
