Seahawks release Kelly Herndon

SEATTLE, June 2 (UPI) -- The Seattle Seahawks have released defensive back Kelly Herndon despite 25 starts at left cornerback in the past two seasons.

Herndon was the most notable player released Friday, when NFL teams could start dropping high-priced veterans from their rosters.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported Herndon was expendable because Josh Wilson had an impressive mini-camp and Herndon likely would have been the third or fourth cornerback on the depth chart. Seattle chose Wilson, who played for Maryland, in the second round in April's NFL draft, and Herndon was due to make $2.5 million next season.

The newspaper also noted the pro-rated portion of Herndon's $3.6 million signing bonus will count $720,000 against the salary cap this year and $1.44 million in 2008.

In five seasons, the former Toledo product has 267 total tackles, one sack and nine interceptions. He suffered a broken left ankle in the first quarter of the regular-season finale against Tampa Bay in 2006 and missed both of the Seahawks' playoff games.
