Giambi out with a foot injury

NEW YORK, May 31 (UPI) -- New York Yankees' first baseman Jason Giambi will miss at least three weeks because of torn tissue in the arch of his left foot, the team said Thursday.

The injury was diagnosed Thursday during an examination with Dr. William Hamilton, an orthopedic foot and ankle specialist based in New York.

The team said on its Web site that Giambi was informed he is suffering from plantar fasciitis and a partial tear of his plantar fascia, the band of tissue connecting his heel to his toes.

He has been placed in a walking boot after being bothered by the ailment for at least a month.

Team spokesman Jason Zillo said Giambi will be re-evaluated in three weeks, and will be placed on the 15-day disabled list prior to Friday's game at Boston.

Veteran slugger is hitting .262 with seven home runs and 23 RBI in 149 at-bats this season.
