Also in the top five were Felipe Massa, Giancarlo Fisichella and Nick Heidfeld.

Alonso, a two-time world champion, brought the field to the green flag for 78 laps of racing around the tight 2.075-mile street course, and after only 12 laps, held a five-second lead over Hamilton. With 10 laps remaining, his lead was down to two seconds, but Hamilton was unable to close ground before the finish.

Alonso's first-place finish left him tied with Hamilton for first place in the point standings after five races. They both have 38 points, five ahead of Massa (33).

Kimi Raikkonen (Ferrari) is fourth with 23 points and Heidfeld (BMW) is fifth with 18 points.
