MLB: LA Angels 3, N.Y. Yankees 1

NEW YORK, May 26 (UPI) -- Kelvim Escobar combined with two relievers on a six-hitter Saturday as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim beat the New York Yankees 3-1.

In seven innings, Escobar (6-2) allowed an earned run on six hits and one walk with eight strikeouts. Scot Shields hurled a scoreless eighth and Francisco Rodriguez overcame two hits by striking out the side in the bottom of the ninth for his 15th save as the Angeles won their second straight.


Gary Matthews Jr. hit a two-run triple in the top of the first, and Casey Kotchman, who had three of the Angels' six hits, followed with an RBI single.

Doug Mientkiewicz hit an RBI single, Robinson Cano hit a second inning single to extend his hitting streak to 10 straight games, but Derek Jeter had his 19-game hitting streak snapped for the Yankees, who have dropped three of four.

The loser was Chien Ming-Wang (3-4).
