MLB: Chi. Cubs 3, San Diego 1

SAN DIEGO, May 24 (UPI) -- Cliff Floyd and Ryan Theriot drove in runs in the ninth inning Thursday night, lifting the Chicago Cubs to a 3-1 triumph over San Diego.

It was only the second win for the Cubs over the Padres in their last 12 meetings.

Cla Meredith (1-2), trying to preserve a 1-1 tie in the ninth, gave up singles to Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez to open the inning, and Floyd then hit a grounder to second base. Marcus Giles threw home in an attempt to cut down the go-ahead run, but Lee slid in safely.

After the Cubs loaded the bases and Heath Bell relieved Meredith, Theriot drove in an insurance run with a grounder to third.

The win went to Bob Howry (2-3), who retired the side in the eighth.

Ryan Dempster worked a perfect ninth with two strikeouts to earn his 10th save.
