MLB: San Diego 2, Chicago Cubs 1

SAN DIEGO, May 23 (UPI) -- Kevin Kouzmanoff hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning Wednesday, delivering San Diego 2-1 win over the Chicago Cubs.

The Kouzmanoff blast made a winner out of David Wells (2-2), who allowed a run on five hits, while striking out five over seven innings. It was the Padres' third straight win.

Sean Marshall (0-1) made the start for the Cubs after being brought up from Class AAA Iowa Tuesday. Kouzmanoff's homer was one of only four hits given up by Marshall, who struck out eight.

Chicago has lost three straight and five out of seven.

Mark DeRosa had four hits for the Cubs, one of them a double that drove in Matt Murton in the second inning. That run stood up until the seventh, when Josh Bard singled and Kouzmanoff drove one into the upper deck in left.
