Charlotta Sorenstam takes sister's place

CORNING, N.Y., May 24 (UPI) -- Charlotta Sorenstam, younger sister of sidelined superstar Annika Sorenstam, took a one-shot lead Thursday after one round of the Corning Classic in New York.

"It was great," the first-round leader said. "I was hoping they would put a 'C' in front of my name on the leader board so everybody knew it was me."

Annika Sorenstam has been out of action since early April due to back and neck surgery. She has said she hopes to play next week at a tournament in South Africa at which she serves as host.

Charlotta Sorenstem fired a 64 at the Corning Country Club while Beth Bader was alone in second after firing a 65. Paula Creamer, Jamie Hullett and Shi Hyun Ahn shared third place at 66.

Charlotta Sorenstam is a non-exempt player on the LPGA Tour, having made only four cuts in 19 starts over the last two years. She spends much of her time running her sister's golf academy.
