Davydenko wins on Hypo second round

PRTSCHACH, Austria, May 23 (UPI) -- Two-time defending champion Nikolay Davydenko won Wednesday and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Hypo Group Tennis International tournament in Austria.

In a day in which the highly seeded players rolled, the No. 1-seeded Davydenko led the way, posting a 6-4, 6-2 win over Nicolas Lapentti. He next faces Juan Monaco, who breezed past Michael Russell 6-3, 6-1 in his second-round match Wednesday.

Second-seeded Andy Roddick was a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Kristian Pless, earning a quarterback berth against Gail Monfils, who upset No. 7 Lee Hyung-taik 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.

Lleyton Hewitt, the No. 4 seed, got into the quarters with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Potito Starace and next is paired against Diego Hartfield, who topped Vincent Spadea 7-6, 7-6 (7-5).

Thursday's fourth quarterfinal sends Luis Horna against Albert Montanes.
