Bode Miller will not compete in 2008

PARK CITY, Utah, May 12 (UPI) -- Former Olympic medalist and World Cup champion Bode Miller will not join the 2008 U.S. Alpine Ski Team.

The 29-year-old, three-time Olympian decided Saturday he would not compete after 11 seasons as a team member.

USSA Pipeline Director Jesse Hunt said Miller will train and travel independently next winter if he races on the World Cup tour.

Miller earned two silver medals at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics, has won four world championships and is the reigning World Cup super G champion. He has 25 World Cup victories, which is two short of Phil Mahre's U.S. record of 27.

"Bode is a great athlete and we hope he will continue to have athletic success," Hunt said in a statement. "We had a serious discussion with Bode about his responsibilities as a team member, and he later advised us he was choosing to not join the team."
