Report: Sosa, Palmeiro under scrutiny

NEW YORK, May 8 (UPI) -- Investigators are seeking medical records of Sammy Sosa and Rafael Palmeiro in the probe of steroid use in Major League Baseball, The New York Times reported.

The investigators want medical records from at least two dozen of baseball's leading hitters during the past 12 years, including Sosa and Palmeiro, the newspaper said. The investigation, headed by former U.S. Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell, D-Maine, is also seeking medical records from dozens of other players suspected of using performance-enhancing drugs, a baseball official told the newspaper.

The investigators have asked the Baltimore Orioles to send medical files on Jason Grimsley, David Segui and Fernando Tatis to those players -- who would then be asked to authorize the release of the files to Mitchell. The players are considered to be unlikely to do so, the Times said.

This is the first time since the Mitchell investigation began last year that specific names have been definitively associated with the inquiry.

Grimsley's lawyer and Sosa declined to comment, the newspaper said. Efforts to reach Segui, Tatis and Palmeiro's agent were unsuccessful.

Mitchell has sent letters to about 36 Major League Baseball players, requesting their testimony before the commission, the Times reported last week.
