MILAN, Italy, May 7 (UPI) -- Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano of Spain birdied the second playoff hole Sunday to beat Austria's Markus Brier and win the Italian Open in Milan.
Fernandrez-Castano closed with a 7-under-par 65 to get into the clubhouse first at 16-under 200.
He was five shots behind leader Nick Dougherty when the rain-plagued tournament began its third and final round on Sunday morning.
"Five shots is a lot to make up on a course where everybody can make birdies," he said. "I haven't been playing well, but my attitude changed this week, probably because I love coming to Italy, great food, great course, great people."
Both Fernandez-Castano and Brier were 16-under 200 when they completed 54 holes.
Brier shot a 4-under 68 to qualify for the playoff.
Dougherty was able to shoot 2-under 70, and finished in a four-way tie for third place at 15-under 201, missing the playoff by one shot.
