NEW YORK, May 5 (UPI) -- Chien-Ming Wang came five outs away from a perfect game Saturday afternoon as the New York Yankees beat Seattle, 8-1.
He retired the first 22 batters he faced before his perfect game ended on a solo home run by Seattle first baseman Ben Broussard with one out in the top of the eighth inning.
In the best outing of the season by a Yankee starter, Wang (1-2) gave up an earned run and two hits in eight innings, with no walks and four strikeouts.
Derek Jeter had three hits and two RBI; both Melky Cabrera and Jorge Posada had one run, two hits and one RBI; Bobby Abreu, Hideki Matsui and Robinson Cano all had one RBI; and Doug Mientkiewicz had two runs and two hits for the Yankees -- who bounced back from a 15-11 loss Friday night.
Jose Guillen had Seattle's other hit.
Loser Jeff Weaver (0-5) gave up six earned runs and nine hits in 5 2/3 innings.
