Boxer Greg Page settles with Kentucky

CINCINNATI, May 5 (UPI) -- Greg Page has accepted a $1.2 million settlement from the state of Kentucky for the brain damage he suffered in a bout against Dale Crowe on March 9, 2001.

The money settles a lawsuit filed against Peel's Palace in Erlanger, Ky. and the old Kentucky Athletic Commission.

Page, 42, a former heavyweight champion, was knocked out in the closing seconds of the 10th and final round.

The bout against Crowe, a native of Norwood, Ohio, was billed as the battle for the heavyweight championship of Kentucky.

Page was admitted to a Cincinnati hospital, suffered a stroke, and slipped into a coma within 24 hours.

The Cincinnati Post reported that he has been in and out of hospitals at least 12 times because of debilitating mental and physical injuries.

Former Gov. Ernie Fletcher established the Kentucky Boxing and Wrestling Authority in January 2005 to monitor fights more closely.

Promoters are required have an ambulance standing by and notify the closest hospital with an on-call neurosurgeon of any possible emergency injuries.
