ST. LOUIS, May 4 (UPI) -- Josh Hancock was drunk last Sunday morning when his rented SUV plowed into tow truck within the city limits of St. Louis on Interstate 65.
The 29-year-old Hancock died in the accident.
At a news conference, Cardinals manager Tony La Russa Friday said he had two separate conversations with Hancock before the fatal accident regarding Hancock's drinking.
Hancock's blood-alcohol level was 0.157, nearly double the legal limit in Missouri.
"I was not surprised," La Russa said. "There was an expectation that alcohol was involved."
A report also said Hancock was traveling approximately 68 miles per hour in a 55 mph zone, was on his cell phone at or before the accident, and that a quantity of marijuana and a glass pipe used to smoke the drug were found in the vehicle he was driving.
Toxicology tests are not complete, and it is not known if marijuana was in his system.
Team members attended Hancock's funeral Thursday in Tupelo, Miss.
