MUNICH, Germany, May 3 (UPI) -- Second seed Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic was among Thursday's second-round winners at the clay-court BMW Open Tennis Tournament at Munich, Germany.
The 6-foot-5 inch Berdych topped Chile's Nicolas Massu, 7-5, 6-1.
Crowd favorite Philipp Kohlschreiber knocked off fifth-seeded Jarkko Nieminen of Finland, 6-1, 6-4; Sebastien Grosjean of France beat Argentine Martin Vassallo Arguello, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4; and France's Nicholas Devilder ousted German qualifier Tobias Summerer, 6-3, 7-5.
In Friday's quarterfinals, third-seeded Mikhail Youzhny of Russia faces No. 8 seed Jurgen Melzer of Austria; fourth-seeded Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus plays German Alexander Waske; Berdych meets Devilder; and Grosjean goes against Kohlschreiber.
The winner of Sunday's final will collect $76,000.
