ESTORIL, Portugal, May 2 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Marion Bartoli of France Wednesday beat Spain's Virginia Ruano Pascual 6-3, 6-3 in the first round of the women's Estoril Open in Estoril, Portugal.
Bartoli is No. 23 in the latest world rankings and has never won a Grand Slam.
She was one of two seeds to win Wednesday before play was halted by rain. The other was No. 3 Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic. Safarova beat Anastasiya Yakimova of Belarus 6-3, 2-6, 6-2.
Elsewhere, qualifier Nika Ozegovic ousted sixth-seeded Russian Maria Kirilenko 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. The latter pair was tied 2-2 in the third set on Tuesday when their match also was suspended because of rain.
In another match, Lourdes Dominguez Lino of Spain topped Italy's Alberta Brianti 6-1, 6-1.
