Youzhny takes BMW Open first-round match

MUNICH, Germany, April 30 (UPI) -- No. 3-seeded Mikhail Youzhny was pushed to a third set Monday but advanced to the second round of the clay-court BMW Open tennis tournament in Germany.

Youzhny breezed in the third set in taking a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 decision over Stefan Koubek in the opening day of the $416,000 tournament.

Fourth-seeded Marcos Baghdatis had an easier time, stopping Diego Hartfield, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3. Also, No. 8 Jurgen Melzer posted a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Olivier Rochus, who won the BMW Open last year.

Other winners Monday were Martin Vassallo Arguello, Philipp Kohlschreiber and Daniel Brands.

The winner of the BMW Open collects $76,000.
