NHL: San Jose 2, Detroit 0

DETROIT, April 27 (UPI) -- Evgeni Nabokov had 34 saves in his fifth career playoff shutout Thursday night, as San Jose beat Detroit, 2-0, in Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals.

Matthew Carle and Mike Grier scored for the Sharks, who reached the semifinals by beating Nashville in five games in the opening playoff round.

Dominik Hasek finished with 17 saves for the Red Wings, who beat Calgary in six games in the quarterfinal round.

San Jose did its scoring early, coming up with both goals within a span of 24 seconds in the first period.

Ryan Clowe passed to Joe Thornton on the power play, and Thornton fed Carle for the first score at 9:45 of the first.

Grier finished off the one-two punch moments later, scoring off a feed from Patrick Rissmiller.

Game 2 is set for Saturday in Detroit.
