Begay has a piece of the lead at Madrid

MADRID, April 26 (UPI) -- American Notah Begay III shot 4-under-par 68 Thursday to grab a piece of the lead after one round of the European Tour's Spanish Open at Madrid.

The other players at the top of the leaderboard are Sweden's Steven Jeppesen and Gregory Bourdy of France.

The opening day was plagued by a torrential rainstorm, hot weather and strong winds.

"When I played the U.S. Tour, it was rumored the weather was bad in Europe and I can testify they were not exaggerating," Begay said. "Thankfully the food and the service was great because we did a lot of sitting around."

The weather forced a suspension of play late in the day because of darkness.
