Mark James leads at Legends of Golf

SAVANNAH, Ga., April 20 (UPI) -- Mark James, despite a pair of late bogeys Friday, grabbed the first-round lead at the Legends of Golf tournament at Savannah, Ga.

James fired a five-under-par 67 and has a one-stroke lead over defending champion Jay Haas, Tom Kite and Tom Purtzer in the 54-hole tournament.

James set the record at the Westin Savannah Harbor Resort and Spa with an eight-under 64 in the final round of last year's event and threatened that mark until the end Friday.

He had birdies on three of his first six holes. James eagled No. 11 with a 6-foot putt and birdied No. 12 to get to minus six. A tap-in birdie at 14 put him seven under.

But he three-putted for bogeys at both Nos. 16 and 17 to come back to the field.
