CINCINNATI, April 13 (UPI) -- Cincinnati Reds shortstop Alex Gonzalez Thursday was placed on the team's bereavement list because of what it called "a family matter."
The Cincinnati Enquirer said the matter involves a sick child.

Gonzalez flew home to his native Venezuela on Thursday morning.
He is permitted to be away for a minimum of three days and a maximum of seven.
The team said on its Web site that a corresponding roster move will be announced before Friday afternoon's game against the Cubs at Chicago's Wrigley Field.
The 30-year-old Gonzalez, who signed a three-year contract as a free agent in November, is hitting .313 in 32 at-bats this season.
He has driven in three runs while playing in all nine of the Reds' games to date.
