MLB: Kansas City 3, Detroit 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo., April 6 (UPI) -- Jorge De La Rosa checked the Tigers on four hits and one run over seven innings Friday night, as the Kansas City Royals beat Detroit, 3-1.

Tony Pena Jr. drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning with his third triple of the season, and David DeJesus knocked in the insurance run with an RBI single. Mark Grudzielanek had the other Royals RBI.

De La Rosa (1-0) walked three and struck out five. David Riske pitched the ninth inning to get the save.

Justin Verlander, the 2006 American League Rookie of the Year, gave up just two hits and one unearned run over six innings -- but he also issued five walks to go with four strikeouts on a night when the game-time temperature was 35.
