NHL: New Jersey 2, Ottawa 1 (SO)

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., April 3 (UPI) -- John Madden scored in the sixth round of the shootout Tuesday, allowing Martin Brodeur to tie a single-season NHL record in New Jersey's 2-1 win over Ottawa.

It was the 47th win of the season for Brodeur, tying him with Bernie Parent of the Philadelphia Flyers for the most in one NHL season. Parent set the record in the 1973-74 campaign.

The dramatics came in the first game behind the bench for New Jersey Coach and General Manager Lou Lamoriello, who on Monday fired Claude Julien as coach.

The Devils moved three points in front of Pittsburgh in the race for the Atlantic Division title. One more point will give New Jersey the crown.
