Daniilidou pulls off first-round surprise

AMELIA ISLAND, Fla., April 2 (UPI) -- Marion Bartoli, the highest seeded player in action Monday, fell to Eleni Daniilidou in the opening round of the Bausch & Lomb Championships.

Daniilidou defeated the 10th-seeded Bartoli 6-0, 6-4.

No. 11 seed Katarina Srebotnik was a 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 winner over Jill Craybas while No. 13 Sybille Bammer advanced when Tamarine Tanasugarn retired in the second set. Bammer held a 6-2, 3-1 advantage when her opponent withdrew.

Among those advancing to the second round were Jie Zheng, Alona Bondarenko and Karla Kanepi.
